What Is a Mini Projector?

A mini projector is a small projector that does not require a mount like much bigger models. It is an 8x8x24 sized device that can be installed anywhere as long as it faces a screen. If it comes with a mount, that only serves as a stand, so the user does not place it on a surface. Mini projectors are designed for indoor spaces and use precision screens that do not require much or any adjustments.

Compared to normal projectors, a mini projector is not ideal for large screens and has certain limitations. However, they are great tools because they can be moved from one spot to the next and do not require any special installation or interior rearrangements to install. They are also very affordable and easy to set up at short notice.

A mini projector may not weigh more than 2 lbs and not more than a paperback book, but they all project good images. However, they may not project the same level of crisp visuals as a normal-sized projector would. Ideally, it is generally for those on a low budget.

How Does a Mini Projector Work?

Mini projectors commonly use one of two technologies: an LED and a DLP projector. The DLP technology uses a set of combination mirrors and special color wheels to generate images projected using a light bulb. For LED technology, the approach is different. The image is first generated using a liquid crystal display and then beamed using LED light. The truth is that these technologies are similar but with slightly different approaches to image creation. But of the two, LED technology is the cheaper and power efficient option, but it delivers less brightness than a DLP projector that uses a bulb.

Another thing you should know is that mini projectors have inputs for connecting AV cords which you can then connect to external devices like gaming consoles, laptops, DVDs, and others. Smarter models also have HDMI ports and use Wifi for streaming. They also have screen sharing and mirroring functions where you can use and share apps on the screen. You can also play files directly from your phone/Laptop storage or memory card.

Despite the benefits of having several connection options, you will most likely not use some of them, only one or two of them. The contrast ratio of Mini projectors is not as high as those of normal projectors, so users are advised to use them in dark rooms, not open air spaces.

What Are the Benefits of a Mini Projector?

Using a mini projector comes with several benefits, and here are some of them.

Slim and Lightweight Design

The first benefit of using a mini projector is the lightweight design. It only occupies a small space, so you don’t have to completely reorganize your space. You can also store it easily when it is not in use.

Portable

Mini projectors are portable and are the best models for long trips. Imagine if you had to go on a long trip and take a bulky and heavy projector with you? That would place a lot of stress on you, wouldn’t it? But a mini projector is not like that. It is portable and will fit into your bag seamlessly. Traveling light with your entertainment device is also possible due to the petite size.

Rechargeable Battery

Conventional projectors don’t have inbuilt batteries, but a mini projector does. This means you can watch your favorite shows wherever you are and not worry about a lack of power sources. You can even use it in a car en route to your next destination if you want. Some mini versions have batteries lasting 2-4 hours if charged fully. That is enough time to watch a movie or several episodes of a series. And what’s more? Many have advanced charging, so their battery charges fully in 2 hours or less.

Affordable

Perhaps the greatest benefit of mini projectors is their affordability. You don’t have to spend too much to get one. To be fair, the image quality and brightness may not be of the same standard as a conversational model; however, the quality is still good enough, especially when used in a controlled setting. You can enjoy the value of crystal clear images without spending too much money.

Easy Set up

The procedure is straightforward, you don’t need technical skills to set up a mini projector. You simply place it on a stand or flat surface facing the screen, and you are good to go. It is that easy.

Smart Connection

It will also interest you that modern mini projectors now have smart connections like Bluetooth and WiFi. You can also do screen mirroring and share your screen in two parts. Connecting to different media using HDMI is possible because they have such ports.

Extended Life

The typical shelf life of a bulb projector can be as little as 2000 hours and up to 20,000 hours. Modern mini projectors with advanced LED technology can last up to 30,0000 hours or more. If you use yours carefully, there is no reason why you should not enjoy your device for many years to come. You reap the value of your investment long term.

Inbuilt Speakers

Last but not least are the inbuilt speakers some of them have. This major benefit that conventional projectors have but cannot be deployed in certain environments. But you can use a mini projector while in a vehicle and still get the same value. You also have the option of connecting Bluetooth speakers to it to improve the sound.

How to Choose a Mini Projector?

If you want to pick a Mini projector for personal use, there are certain functions you need to look for; otherwise, you may end up with a substandard device that doesn’t represent value for money. Mini projectors are much smaller than normal models, so their luminosity is not at the same level but still yet, they need to offer more than the bare minimum.

Here are some functions and features to look out for when selecting a mini projector.

Contrast Ratio

Always keep your eyes out for the contrast ratio. Contrast is the difference between the light and dark areas on the screen. To get the accurate ratio of a projector, you need to compare the screen luminosity to the brightest and darkest portions. Two factors that affect the contrast ratio are ambient light and screen quality. You will enjoy clear images even in rooms with significant ambient light if you buy a mini projector with a good contrast ratio. But if the ratio is poor, no amount of regulation will improve the image. So we recommend a contrast ratio of at least 1000:1 or above. Any ratio below this is not good enough.

Resolution

The next thing to look out for is the screen resolution. Screen resolution should not be mistaken for contrast because they mean different things. While contrast is the difference between brightness and darkness, the resolution is the picture quality. Mini projectors with higher resolution produce crisp and sharp images. They don’t distort images or project a different color; instead, what you see is the original color. The minimum resolution you should be looking for in a mini projector is anything above 850x480p. If you can get a model that can offer more, the better because higher resolutions deliver better images.

Ease of Use

One of the main advantages of mini projectors is that they are easy to use; however, if the one you buy has complex settings and is difficult to operate, then the aim of having a projector system is defeated. While the first few tries may be confusing, a good mini projector should be easy to operate and install, as with any new device. If you go for one with wireless features, all the better, you don’t have to deal with wires all the time.

Ensure your model works with higher bandwidth, so screen latency is minimized when streaming wirelessly. If you must go the wires route, only buy models with several input options like AV, VGA, etc. But for models that use software and apps, expect regular updates.

Throw Distance

Throw distance is the maximum distance required for the projector to project clear pictures. The average throw distance is divided into the throw, the short throw, and the ultra-short throw distance. While normal projectors support all three, mini projectors only support short throw and ultra short throw distance.

A short throw model will allow you to position the device about 3-8ft away from the screen for a full image. For ultra-short throw models, the distance is 0-4ft. We recommend short throw models of the two since you will likely be using yours in a confined space. Mini projectors are flexible to be used in an indoor space, but kindly note that they don’t have long throw capabilities, so placing them far away from your screen will not work.

Brightness

Another thing to remember is the brightness, which affects every other screen effect. Screen brightness is measured by ANSI (American National Standard Institute) standards. The higher the Lumens, the brighter the images will be. The standard for mini projectors is between 500-800 ANSI lumens, but we don’t recommend this standard for one major reason.

A mini projector with 500-800 ANSI is not ideal for bright rooms with ambient light. Even if you switch off all the bulbs in the room, the natural light passing through the windows will interfere with the picture quality. But at night you will have no such problems. But we don’t think you only wish to use your projector at night, do you?

That is why we recommend a least a 1000 lumens model. You will not be perturbed by natural light entry with such a model. During the day, the picture quality will be good, and at night it will even be better.

Overall Image Quality

The overall image quality is another thing to consider when shopping for a mini projector. The above points we addressed, such as the contrast ratio, brightness, resolution, and throw distance, all work together to improve the image production; that is why you should take all of them seriously. As we pointed out in a previous paragraph, don’t go for a model below 800p. If you can get something higher, that’s better.

Weight

When choosing a mini projector, don’t forget the weight. You don’t want anything too heavy; light always wins it. If it is 2kg maximum, then it is good enough. You can transport it with ease.

Battery

Check the battery and ensure it can last for at least 2 hours or more of fully charged. Any mini projector that cannot run for up to 2 hours is not good enough.

Screen Alignment

Screen alignment saves you from the stress of adjusting the screen. Instead of wasting your time manually, the auto screen function will be activated once it comes on to fit the image into the screen automatically. It is even better to have an auto-focus function to project sharp and clear images. This function enhances the user experience greatly.

Connections

A good Mini projector should have wired and wireless connections. For wired connections, it should have different options like USB, AV, HDMI, and audio jack connections, so you have the luxury of using anyone you like. It should also have a wireless feature like Bluetooth. With Bluetooth, you can connect external speakers and media devices to the projector if you don’t want to use wires. Bluetooth also allows you to connect to internet broadband.

Mini Projector FAQs

How to Connect a Phone to a Mini Projector?

There are different ways to connect your phone to a mini projector. As long as the phone is functional and is Android, you can connect it to your mini projector. Many projectors come with native streaming functions, but you still need an external device to complete the process. Here are some ways to connect your phone to a mini projector.

Chromecast: If you have Google Chromecast, you can make the connection. This device works with Android phones, and you can watch videos seamlessly once you make the connection.

Streaming Devices: There are so many streaming devices for phone streaming. Roku is one of them, and Miracast is another. Connecting a streaming device may not be the best option because your phone can screen mirror to the projector, but it remains a viable method.

Built-in screen: This is the internal streaming function in some Mini projectors. This function works with an app that you must download from the Google Play store. Download and install the app on your phone and follow the instructions to make the connection.

HDMI: Using HDMI is direct and one we recommend if your mini projector has an HDMI port. Simply plug one end of the cable into the phone and the HDMI cable into the projector to make the connection. Direct connections also work with MHL, DP, and USB-C drives.

How to Set Up the Mini Projector on a Laptop?

Here is how to set up your mini projector with a laptop.
Arrange the equipment: The Laptop, projector, cable, adapter

With all the items in place, do the following
· Switch on the laptop
· Plug the HDMI/VGA cable and adapter into the laptop
· Plug the other end into the projector
· Turn on the mini projector
· Open the protective cap and the lens

Your mini projector is ready but completes the required configuration before you start streaming from the laptop.

How to Connect Speaker to Mini Projector?

Mini projectors are small-sized devices that may not have speakers like bigger models. So to get any sound from them, you need to connect speakers directly or indirectly. There are different types of speakers that work with mini projectors, such as

Soundbar: A Soundbar is a single unit speaker with a Hugh Audio output.
Standalone: Standalone speakers are a set of separate speakers that stand individually. They have different wattages.
Bluetooth: Bluetooth speakers are wireless speakers you can connect to your mini projector using Bluetooth technology. This is the speaker of choice for many streamers who use mini projectors.
AV Receiver: This is a wired receiver that works with an amplifier. Receivers used to be popular during the VCR era; however, it has been overshadowed by modern audio systems.

How then do you connect your mini projector to a speaker?
· Position the speakers in exactly the way you want them, then insert the batteries into the battery box or plug them into a power socket, depending on the model
· Connect the audio cable to any of the projector’s output
· Connect the other cable port to the speaker. Make sure each speaker so connected to a separate connector.

With the speakers fully connected, switch on the projector and play any of your videos. As it plays the file, adjust the volume.

Do Mini Projectors Have Sound?

It depends. Not all mini projectors have sound. Most mini projectors are too small to have inbuilt speakers; the ones that have speakers have a low-quality sound that may not give you an ultimate viewing experience. This is why buyers are advised to buy an extern speaker rather than depend on terrible sound output.

How to Hook Up a Mini Projector?

You must be strategic if you want to hook up a mini projector. Follow these steps outlined below.

Choose a Spot
Pick a perfect spot for the mini projector in the room. The spot you pick should depend on whether the attachment is for the ceiling or wall. Let the mount accessory influence your choice of location. Also, remember that the spot should be free of obstruction or anything that will endanger the projector.

Fix the Mount
Now that you’ve found a spot for it, fix the mount. Make sure you follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer and that the plate is level, so the projector does not slip off.

Calculate Mount Distance
With the mount in place, calculate the distance between the lens and the mount and make the required adjustments to meet the throw distance requirements. You can use tape to measure the distance between the lens and the center of the mount. This length should be added to the acceptable throw distance range. The distance should be between 16ft – 16.5ft and not more.

Secure the Projector
Identify the joist and secure it to the mount with your screwdriver and lag bolts. Flat bolts with hexagonal heads are the best because they last long and can penetrate wood or concrete. If you have to drill the wall or ceiling to install an anchor, do that, then make sure you screw in the projector tightly.

Secure the Cable
Connect the cables to the projector using the manual guide, then secure it with fasteners. Make sure you run the cable tidily, so you don’t make a mess of your wall.

Adjust the Settings
Adjust the mini projector’s settings to get the lens shift, zoom and focus right. Then use the manual as a guide to adjust the color, contrast, and brightness settings.

Is a Projector Better Than a TV?

That will depend on your preference. Some people prefer projectors for their bold pictures, while others prefer Tv sets because they are easy to install and don’t have to rearrange their interior spaces. Projectors will give you buyer images since you can install large screens as big as 100 inches and above. TVs, on the other hand, may not have large screens, but there are HD sets with 70-80 inch screens and higher.

So it is a matter of choice. Both offer sharp visuals and bright colors for maximum entertainment.

How to Play Movies on Mini Projector?

Many of us like to play movies in our mini projectors, but how is it done? Let’s reveal the steps.

Before you set the ball rolling, you must have installed the projector with all the necessary connections. Switch on your media source (PC, DVD, Streaming service) to test if your connection was made right. If everything is fine, then do the following.
For PC: If a computer is your media source, restart it, then press the Function key so you can make the switch from video output to HDMI. Use the focus key around the projector’s lens to clear the screen’s image. Once you can see a clear image, you can start playing your movie by pressing the play button on your computer.

Note: The same process works for streaming platforms.

System calibration: If your mini projector is old, you may need to calibrate it to connect and show videos from a DVD player. With the connection intact and both systems on, press the play button on your DVD, then select the grid pattern option on the projectors as soon as it comes up. If you notice that the pattern is pyramids, use the projector lens to fix it by tilting the lens to the middle. If the pattern has a pyramid shape, tilt the lens down and up if it has a diamond or inverted pyramid shape. Continue to adjust it until you get a square shape.

With the square shape now stable, you can play your movie with your DVD player.

Mini Projector Vs. 4k Projector

A Mini projector is good digital hardware but is limited compared to what a 4K projector can offer. Mini projectors are small and range from DLP to LED models. There are also LCD and LCos models with 1080p resolution. However, they are not as colorful or bright as 4K projectors. 4K models are the zenith of modern projector technology but are very expensive.

The difference is clear when you compare the picture quality of a Mini projector and a 4k projector. However, 4K technology is expensive due to its high-tech features and high lumens rate. While a mini projector may give you only 1500 lumens, some 4k projectors can deliver up to 5000 lumens. Unless you have the budget and content for 4K, stick to a mini for its affordability and flexibility.

Mini Projector Vs. Projector

A Mini projector is just like any other projector, the difference being the size. Mini versions were designed for two major reasons. Firstly for ease of installation in small spaces and secondly, for ease of transportation. A mini projector can do what many other projectors can do. Many of them have 1080p resolution quality and great project pictures. Their only downside is that they are not as bright as the bigger model. However, they are affordable and work well in rooms with limited ambient light.

Conclusion

When choosing a Mini projector, Home Theater Projector, or a Home Projector, you need to weigh the pros and cons.
